Former NBA Star Michael Ray Richardson Dies at 70

Michael Ray Richardson, a four-time NBA All-Star and former New York Knicks standout, has died at 70. Richardson was known for his defensive skills and played for the Knicks, Golden State Warriors, and New Jersey Nets before receiving a lifetime suspension from the NBA in 1986. He was traded multiple times during his career, including to the Nets where he found his form. Richardson’s controversial off-court behavior, including homophobic and antisemitic remarks, sparked debate over the NBA’s disciplinary approach. Former NBA Commissioner David Stern, who was Jewish, expressed uncertainty about Richardson’s antisemitism but did not defend his comments about homosexuals. Richardson later coached in the Continental Basketball League and the National Basketball League of Canada, with career averages of 14.8 points and 7 assists per game.
