Suspect in College Pre-Med Student’s Hit-and-Run Has Criminal Past

The University of Kansas student was killed in a hit-and-run incident while jogging in Lawrence, Kansas. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 20-year-old Elsa McGrain was struck by a white pickup truck and fled the scene. The body was discovered later by a passerby, and the suspect, William Ray Klingler, was arrested after a public appeal for tips.

McGrain, who was studying pre-medicine and set to graduate in 2, was a member of the Chi Omega sorority, which has expressed an outpouring of grief at her passing. Court records indicate that Klingler has a history of criminal behavior, including two DUI charges, attempts to disable vehicle ignition interlocks, and various juvenile offenses dating back to 2003. The sheriff’s office has expressed empathy for the victim’s family and friends, noting the tragic nature of the incident.

Klingler has not been formally charged yet, but he has been booked into jail on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. The incident has drawn comparisons to other hit-and-run cases, including a Florida case where a serial offender was accused of dragging a bicyclist to death. The case has highlighted the need for increased awareness and accountability in such incidents.

McGrain’s sorority has paid tribute to her life, emphasizing her kindness and leadership attributes. Her death has left a void in the community, as she was remembered as someone who uplifted others with her genuine and caring nature. The case continues to be investigated by authorities.
