Rhode Island Students Form Conservative Group After Teacher Mocks Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

Students at a Rhode Island high school have launched a Turning Point USA chapter following a teacher’s mocking comments about Charlie Kirk’s assassination, sparking debates on campus free speech and conservative values. The incident occurred after teacher Benjamin Fillo posted a video criticizing Kirk’s views on LGBTQ+ issues and women’s rights, leading to backlash and the formation of the student group.

Brayden Ryan, vice president of the Turning Point USA chapter at Barrington High School, explained that the teacher’s comments were a catalyst for the chapter’s formation. Fillo’s video, which appeared shortly after Kirk’s public assassination in September, included harsh criticisms of Kirk’s stance on LGBTQ+ issues and women’s rights. This led to significant backlash, prompting students to organize the chapter to advocate for conservative values and free speech on campus.

Kaplan, president of the Turning Point USA chapter, noted that while some have expressed support for their efforts, others have campaigned to reinstate Fillo. ‘We don’t reward hate with hate,’ Kaplan stated. ‘All we do is we push harder and try to recruit more people to join.’ The group aims to create a safe space for students to express their political and religious beliefs.

The school district has acknowledged the formation of the student group, emphasizing that it is one of several new proposed clubs. Sarah Dell, spokesperson for Barrington School District, reiterated that the school supports students in pursuing new clubs that reflect their interests, provided they adhere to the established student activities protocol.

The incident highlights broader discussions about ideological polarization and free speech in educational settings. It also raises questions about the role of educators in shaping campus discourse and the impact of public figures’ actions on student activism.
