Acid Reflux Becoming ‘Silent Epidemic’ Among Men: Expert Warns of Health Risks

Gut health expert Dr. Daryl Gioffre has sounded the alarm on the growing crisis of acid reflux, revealing it is becoming a ‘silent epidemic’ among men. While gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects both genders, men tend to experience more severe symptoms and a greater likelihood of developing life-threatening conditions like Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer. This is attributed to biological differences, such as men producing less protective mucus, combined with lifestyle factors like stress, poor sleep, and diets heavy in processed foods.

Gioffre explains that men are also more likely to ignore early symptoms, leading to chronic inflammation and increased acid exposure. Lifestyle choices such as late-night eating, larger portions, and reliance on convenience foods exacerbate the problem. Additionally, factors such as increased caffeine intake and the consumption of certain foods like spicy dishes or carbonated drinks further weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, contributing to acid reflux.

To combat this trend, the doctor advocates for lifestyle modifications, such as eating at least three hours before bedtime to allow the body time to digest. He also recommends incorporating alkaline minerals, digestive enzymes, and probiotics into the diet, alongside maintaining good sleep habits and reducing stress. These steps are crucial not just for managing acid reflux, but for overall digestive and gut health.
