The BBC has issued a public apology to US President Donald Trump for a documentary that was accused of misleadingly editing his speech, which occurred shortly before the 2021 Capitol riot. The apology includes a personal letter from BBC chair Samir Shah to the White House, expressing regret over the deceptive edit and vowing not to rebroadcast the documentary on any platforms. The apology follows Trump’s threat to sue the BBC for $1 billion unless it retracts the documentary and compensates him. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt has called the network a ‘leftist propaganda machine.’ The scandal also led to the resignation of BBC Director-General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness. Several British legislators have criticized the network, with UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Bedinoch calling the edit of Trump’s speech ‘absolutely shocking.’ Trump previously secured large payouts from CBS News’ parent company, Paramount,, and from ABC as part of legal settlements.
