Expert Warns of ‘Silent Epidemic’ of Acid Reflux Affecting Men’s Health

Dr. Daryl Gioffre, a gut health specialist, has raised concerns about acid reflux becoming a ‘silent epidemic’ among men, warning of its severe health consequences. Unlike women, men face a higher risk of complications from GERD, including Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that can lead to esophageal cancer. Studies indicate men are nearly twice as likely to develop Barrett’s, and esophageal cancer is up to nine times more common in men. In addition to biological factors like lower mucus production and higher visceral fat, lifestyle choices such as poor sleep, processed diets, and alcohol consumption contribute to this issue. Gioffre recommends dietary and lifestyle changes, like avoiding late-night eating and incorporating alkaline foods, to reduce acid reflux symptoms and prevent long-term damage.
