Israeli Man Smuggles 186 Exotic Animals in Luggage, Faces Charges

An Israeli man has been accused of smuggling 186 exotic animals, including snakes, turtles, and lizards, from Thailand into Israel. The incident was discovered at Ben Gurion Airport, where the suspect was caught for entering the green lane instead of the red lane for declaring items. Authorities seized the animals, which were estimated to be worth tens of thousands of dollars, and warned of the potential invasive impact on local wildlife and agriculture.

Officials emphasized the risks posed by smuggled animals, including the spread of dangerous parasites and diseases. The suspect could face charges of severe abuse and violating animal welfare laws. Authorities are working to return the animals to their countries of origin.

This incident follows a similar case in July at the same airport where an individual attempted to smuggle nearly 14,0000 exotic reptiles and arthropods, with one of the snakes dying during the trip. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority has stated that wildlife smuggling constitutes a severe violation of multiple laws. Passengers are advised to follow proper procedures for transporting pets, including submitting to veterinary inspections and adhering to regulations for different types of animals.
