Google is taking aggressive legal action to combat the prevalence of phishing scams over text messages, as highlighted in a recent report by BGR. The company is targeting Lighthouse, an operation alleged to provide tools that enable customers to set up specialized phishing scams. Google estimates that Lighthouse-affiliated scams in the U.S. have resulted in the theft of between 12.7 million and 115 million credit cards. The company has initiated a comprehensive legal strategy, including RICO, Lanham Act, and CFAA, to dismantle the operation and hold responsible parties accountable. Google is also working with Congress to pass new legislation to counter fraud and protect vulnerable groups like retirees. The three bills proposed in the SCAM Act, Foreign Robocall Elimination Act, and GUARD Act aim to establish a national strategy to counter scam compounds and provide resources for law enforcement to investigate financial fraud. This initiative underscores Google’s commitment to addressing the issue of SMS-based scams and protecting consumers from financial loss.
