NetChoice Sues Virginia Over Social Media Usage Limits for Minors

NetChoice, a coalition representing major tech companies including Meta, Google, Amazon, Reddit, and Discord, has filed a lawsuit against Virginia to block a new law that imposes a one-hour daily limit on social media use for children under 16 without parental approval. The law, known as SB 85, requires platforms to implement age verification methods, which NetChoice claims could lead to privacy and security issues. The organization argues that the law infringes on free speech rights by restricting minors’ access to legal content, comparing it to government limitations on reading books or watching documentaries. NetChoice’s co-director, Paul Taske, emphasized that the law shifts parental responsibility from families to the state, potentially exposing users to privacy breaches. The lawsuit raises concerns about the balance between protecting minors and safeguarding their constitutional rights.
