Chinese Spies Target U.K. Lawmakers via LinkedIn, MI5 Warns

Britain’s domestic intelligence agency has issued a warning that China is using LinkedIn to target UK lawmakers and parliamentary staff, according to recent disclosures. The agency revealed that China has been leveraging professional networking platforms to gather intelligence on key political figures, particularly those with access to classified information.

Security minister Dan Jarvis emphasized the gravity of the situation, calling the activities a ‘covert and calculated attempt’ by China. He stressed the importance of safeguarding national security in light of these developments. The warning comes amid heightened concerns over foreign interference in democratic institutions, with the UK authorities urging increased vigilance among political leaders

The report suggests that Chinese operatives are operating under the guise of legitimate business or recruitment endeavors, using LinkedIn to build trust and establish connections with target individuals. This method allows them to discreetly access sensitive information, posing a significant threat to the integrity of the UK’s political system. MI5 has recommended intensified monitoring of online activity related to these platforms and enhanced cybersecurity measures for government personnel.
