Google’s Data Collection Continues on Decommissioned Nest Thermostats

Google is still gathering extensive data from first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats, despite officially ending support for these devices and disabling remote control functionality. Security researcher Cody Kociemba discovered this through his work on the No Longer Evil project, an open-source solution aimed at restoring smart functionality to unsupported Nest devices. While Koci, Emma’s project allowed for custom software to mimic Google’s API, he found that these devices continue to transmit logs containing information about temperature changes, motion, and ambient light. Kociemba noted that the connection between the devices and Google is not fully severed, leaving a one-way data flow.
