Gen Z Password Security Lags Behind Older Generations

NordPass recently conducted a comprehensive analysis of password usage across different age demographics, revealing that Generation Z is significantly less secure in their password practices compared to older generations. The report indicated that ‘12345’ is the most commonly used password among Gen Z users, while ‘123456’ remains the most widely used password across all age groups. This highlights a growing concern in digital security, as basic passwords continue to expose users to potential cyber threats.

Security.org’s password security checker further emphasized the vulnerability of these simple passwords, stating that a computer could crack any of these instantaneously. Attackers often do not need to expend significant resources to breach accounts, as they can simply spray a list of known passwords at an authentication API and gain access to accounts in a matter of seconds. The findings suggest a critical need for improved cyber education, particularly among younger users who may not fully understand the consequences of weak password practices.
