Khanna Reveals Democrats’ Strategy on Immigration and Party’s Future

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., has outlined a Democratic strategy that seeks to retain most of the Biden-era immigrants while potentially adopting elements of Trump’s border security measures for political advantage. During a recent conversation, Khanna emphasized a vision rooted in the New Deal, focusing on economic rights and production rather than solely on social welfare. He described his approach as an economic bill of rights, similar to FDR’s policies, which included universal childcare and national healthcare. Khanna also addressed the issue of immigration, stating that those who are already in the country should be allowed to stay if they are contributing to the economy, while those who have committed crimes should face deportation after due process. He suggested that securing the border is a necessary step for the party to avoid losing elections, indicating a strategic shift in the Democratic approach to immigration. Khanna also touched on the party’s evolving stance on Israel, noting that while he supports Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, he has become more critical of Netanyahu’s leadership. He acknowledged the potential of Trump’s peace efforts to reduce tensions with Israel. Furthermore, Khanna highlighted the internal party tensions, expressing support for John Fetterman’s concerns about the party moving too far left, and indicating a shift in the definition of ‘progressive Democrat’ within the party.
