Randy Jones, Cy Young Award-Winning Padres Hall of Famer, Dies at 75

Randy Jones, the southpaw who won the National League Cy Young Award in 1976, has passed away at the age of 75. The San Diego Padres veteran, recognized as a cornerstone of the franchise, made his MLB debut in 1973 and quickly became a key player. Jones’ early career was marked by impressive stats, including a 3.16 ERA in his rookie season. His performance in 1975, with an NL-leading 2.24 ERA, earned him his first All-Star nod and a strong showing in the Cy Young Award voting.

The following season, he reached new heights with an MLB-leading 315.1 innings, 25 complete games, and a 1.03 WHIP. Despite some setbacks, including an injury that impacted his performance later in his career, Jones remains a significant figure in Padres history and a Hall of Famer. The Padres honored his legacy by retiring his No. 35 jersey and inducting him into their Hall of Fame in 1999.
