A large-scale Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine rocked the western city of Ternopil Tuesday night, killing more than two dozen people, including three children.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed Wednesday that at least 25 people were killed and 73 injured in the strike that hit two nine-story residential buildings. The attack caused widespread destruction, with emergency services working tirelessly to rescue victims from the rubble and contain the fires that followed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched over 470 drones and 48 missiles in the overnight assault, highlighting the scale of the attack. In a statement on X, Zelenskyy stressed the importance of acquiring more air defense missiles, expanding combat aviation capabilities, and increasing drone production to safeguard civilian lives. He emphasized that the attack underscores the need for stronger sanctions and support for Ukraine.
Photos from the scene depicted the aftermath of the assault, showing shattered windows, blackened buildings, and smoke rising from the wreckage. The devastation has raised concerns about the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict, with many calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Poland’s Operational Command stated that it had scrambled fighter jets and raised air defense readiness in response to the attacks, underscoring the potential threat to neighboring countries. The decision was framed as a preventive measure to protect Polish airspace near the border with Ukraine.
NATO allies like Romania and Latvia have also reported incursions by Russian drones into their airspace, further intensifying the geopolitical tensions. These incidents have drawn criticism of Russia’s continued aggression and heightened calls for a coordinated international response.
Despite the toll of the attacks, Ukraine’s government is focusing on bolstering its defenses, recognizing the necessity of securing its air space and infrastructure. However, the ongoing conflict continues to place a heavy burden on the country’s resources and civilian population.
