Crime Surge During Holidays: Authorities Warn of ‘Jugging’ Thieves Targeting Shoppers

Authorities throughout the country are warning shoppers to remain vigilant ahead of their holiday errands as thieves are turning to a popular crime trend to make off with quick cash. The trend, known as ‘jugging,’ involves criminals following victims from ATMs, banks, or stores in an effort to steal their cash or new purchases, according to the FBI. Law enforcement officers typically see a rise in incidents around the holiday season, with shoppers often walking around with large sums of cash or high-cost gifts.

Retired NYPD officer Bill Stanton told Fox News Digital that ‘jugging’ is just a slang term for crimes of opportunity. He compared the predators to crocodiles waiting near a watering hole, suggesting that criminals target areas where people are likely to be vulnerable. Recent incidents, including a violent ATM robbery in Houston, have heightened concerns as law enforcement reports an increase in such crimes during the holidays. Stanton emphasized that it’s not a matter of if, but when, and advised shoppers to take precautions to avoid becoming easy targets.

The FBI has also issued warnings to individuals to vary their banking habits and avoid creating a traceable routine. They recommend concealing cash when leaving an ATM or store and avoiding behaviors that might attract attention. Stanton urged shoppers to take the money, put it deep in their pocket, and go directly to their car without displaying it. He also advised victims who find themselves in a dangerous situation to simply hand over the money and prioritize their safety over the cash.

Recent cases have highlighted the growing threat of ‘jugging’ crimes. In one instance, a 70-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint while withdrawing cash from an ATM in a Walmart parking lot in Houston. Police reported that the suspect forced the victim to withdraw cash, then shot him after he handed over the money. The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Similar incidents have occurred in other locations, with suspects following victims from ATMs to car washes or gas stations to steal cash or stolen items.

Law enforcement has also noted that criminals are growing bolder, particularly in areas that were previously considered less prone to such crimes. A Houston man recently received a 120-month federal prison sentence for his involvement in a ‘jugging’ robbery of an ATM technician. The incident involved a coordinated effort where the victims were followed to multiple stops before being attacked and stripped of hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. The stolen money was used to purchase luxury items, indicating the scale of these crimes.

As the holiday season approaches, authorities are intensifying efforts to raise public awareness about the dangers of ‘jugging’ crimes. They are urging shoppers to stay alert and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their belongings. Bill Stanton’s warning remains relevant: while holiday shopping is a time for enjoyment, it’s also a period when criminals are actively seeking opportunities to exploit unsuspecting victims.
