During a Wednesday podcast appearance with The Bulwark, former Vice President Kamala Harris confronted President Donald Trump over his refusal to release the Epstein files, labeling his actions as ‘gaslighting’ the American people. Harris argued that Trump’s insistence on requiring congressional approval for the release of the files is inconsistent with his past executive decisions, questioning why he suddenly needs legislative backing. She demanded, ‘Release the files!’ emphasizing Trump’s role as the head of the executive branch.
Harris’ statement came just hours before Trump announced he had signed legislation authorizing the Justice Department to release the files, with the House passing the measure by a 421–1 margin. The Epstein Files Transparency Act specifically directs the Justice Department to release all unclassified records and investigative materials related to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislane Maxwell, as well as files related to individuals referenced in Epstein’s legal cases, trafficking allegations, internal DOJ communications, and details about the investigation into his death. Files containing victims’ names, child sex abuse materials, classified information, or details that could threaten an active investigation may be withheld or redacted by the DOJ.
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the DOJ would comply with the law, set to release the files online within 30 days. Trump’s message on Truth Social highlighted his role in pushing for the bill’s passage, noting that the House and Senate voted almost unanimously in favor of the measure after his request. The Democratic lawmakers who spearheaded the bill, including Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna, expressed concerns about the public’s right to transparency and warned of potential consequences for the administration if the files revealed significant information. The political tension surrounding the issue intensified as both parties debated the implications of the released records, with Harris framing Trump’s stance as an attempt to obscure the truth.
