Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., has announced his intention to expel Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., over allegations that the Democratic congresswoman misappropriated $5 million in FEMA funds for her 2021 congressional campaign. The federal indictment, filed by the Justice Department, alleges that Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, orchestrated a scheme to divert funds from a FEMA-funded contract for staffing COVID-19 vaccinations. These allegedly misappropriated funds were reportedly funneled into campaign accounts and personal use, according to the Justice Department’s statement.
Steube, who initially planned to file a motion to censure Cherfilus-McCormick on Thursday, has changed course, deciding instead to pursue expulsion.
