DOGE Disbanded Ahead of Scheduled End, Functions Absorbed by Other Agencies

The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has quietly disbanded eight months ahead of its scheduled end, according to Reuters.

President Donald Trump launched DOGE in January 2025 with the goal of slashing federal waste and bureaucracy, appointing Elon Musk as his government efficiency czar. However, the agency has dissolved ahead of its scheduled termination in July 2025, with its functions and staff integrated into other government departments. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has taken on several of DOGE’s responsibilities, reported Reuters, citing OPM Director Scott Kupor. Kupor reportedly stated that DOGE “doesn’t exist” and that its operations have been absorbed into existing government structures.

The Trump administration has not openly confirmed the agency’s dissolution, but references to DOGE have shifted to the past tense, signaling its disbandment. DOGE was initially celebrated as a bold effort to reduce the size and inefficiencies of the federal government, aiming to cut hundreds of thousands of jobs and streamline operations. However, the agency faced significant opposition, including legal challenges to its efforts to cut the federal budget and reduce the workforce. The tensions within the agency escalated in June when Musk resigned as head of DOGE amid a public dispute with Trump over the president’s flagship “big, beautiful bill.” This conflict, combined with internal struggles, likely contributed to the agency’s premature dissolution.

The rehiring of hundreds of former DOGE employees by the White House in September highlights the administration’s attempt to mitigate the agency’s impact. While DOGE has been disbanded, its legacy remains evident as its functions are now operated by other parts of the federal government. The agency’s dissolution represents a shift in Trump’s approach to governance, as it marked the end of a high-profile initiative that was originally intended to reshape the structure of federal operations.
