The European Union has rejected the Ukraine peace deal proposed by the United States, including the plan submitted by former President Donald Trump, and has instead introduced its own set of conditions for a potential agreement. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU has agreed on the main elements necessary for a just and lasting peace, ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and the integrity of its military capabilities. This move places the EU in direct conflict with the leaked US proposal, which was reportedly discussed with EU and Ukrainian representatives in Geneva.
Bloomberg reported that the EU aimed to essentially rewrite the US plan by disguising major changes as constructive updates, while also seeking to delay the American deadline for a resolution. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky highlighted the difficult choice Ukraine faces, either accepting the 28 points or risking a hard winter without a key partner. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Moscow had received the American plan and suggested it could form the basis of a final peace settlement, though further details remain to be discussed.
