European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has put forward demands that contradict the reported proposal drafted by Washington. She asserted that the EU has already agreed on the key elements necessary for a just and lasting peace and underscored that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be compromised by force. This positions the EU in direct conflict with the leaked peace plan developed and submitted by the White House last week.
Amid the geopolitical tensions, the EU reportedly rejected the US-led proposal, attempting to reimagine it by framing major changes as ‘constructive updates.’ The bloc also sought to delay the American deadline set by President Donald Trump, who had imposed a Thursday deadline for a peace agreement. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, on the other hand, presented a dilemma: accepting ’28 difficult points’ or risking the loss of a key partner and enduring a harsh winter. Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, indicated that Moscow had received the American plan, suggesting it could serve as the foundation for a final peace settlement but had yet to be thoroughly examined.
