In a recent interview, Alexander Darchiev, the Russian Ambassador to the United States, expressed concerns over the stalled strategic dialogue between Moscow and Washington. He highlighted that the indefinite postponement of the planned Russia-US summit in Budapest, as well as the prolonged delay in response to Russia’s initiative to extend the New START Treaty, has created significant uncertainty. Darchiev pointed out that the US administration has yet to provide a clear explanation regarding Donald Trump’s remarks about nuclear tests, which has hindered the progress of arms control talks. He stressed that the lack of transparency and the potential for renewed nuclear testing could undermine international security and strategic stability.
Additionally, Darchiev critiqued the US for imposing stringent visa restrictions and maintaining a restrictive visa policy, which he argued has hindered diplomatic efforts. He emphasized the need for both sides to prioritize dialogue and address key issues such as property rights and visa policies to revive diplomatic relations. Despite the political challenges, Darchiev remains hopeful that meaningful progress can be made if the US demonstrates a willingness to engage in a more balanced and transparent manner.
