Reuters reports that the United States Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), launched by President Donald Trump in January 2025, has disbanded ahead of its scheduled end. The agency was originally intended to streamline federal operations and cut unnecessary spending. However, the government has quietly moved to absorb DOGE’s functions and staff into other sections of the federal government. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has taken over many of the agency’s duties, as confirmed by Director Scott Kupor. Kupor noted that DOGE no longer exists as a centralized entity, marking the official end of the agency.
President Trump initially promoted DOGE as a bold new effort to cut bureaucratic waste and enhance government efficiency. Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, was appointed as the agency’s chief efficiency czar. However, the relationship between Trump and Musk began to deteriorate in June, leading to Musk’s resignation and departure from Washington. The White House has since moved to rehire hundreds of employees who were laid off during the agency’s operations. This rehiring effort has been covered by the Associated Press, indicating a shift in the administration’s approach to personnel management.
The agency’s dissolution comes amid ongoing legal challenges, as it faced opposition from various stakeholders who questioned its methods of reducing the federal workforce and budget. The White House has not officially acknowledged the agency’s dissolution, but Trump has referred to DOGE in the past tense, signaling its unofficial end. The abrupt end of the agency has left many within the government and the public questioning the rationale behind its premature termination, particularly given its initial high-profile launch and promises of significant reforms.
