John Paul Cupp, a 45-year-old man from Portland, has been charged with making violent threats against law enforcement officers and their families. The allegations stem from an incident at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building in South Portland, where Cupp allegedly insulted officers on October 14 and made explicit threats of violence. Federal court filings describe Cupp’s statements, in which he threatened to kill officers, sexually assault their wives, and harm their children.
According to the FBI, Cupp is a prolific poster of online content that includes aggressive rhetoric, calls for war against the United States, antisemitic threats, and violent threats against law enforcement. The FBI Director, Kash Patel, has emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating extremism, stating that individuals who threaten public safety will face the full force of the law. Patel stressed, “If you threaten to kill law enforcement officers or harm their families, you will face the full weight of the federal government.” This case highlights the growing concern over online extremism and the legal consequences that accompany such actions.
Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford expressed firm opposition to threats against law enforcement, stating that such behavior “will not be tolerated”. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office remains committed to holding those accountable who threaten and intimidate those who protect our communities,” he said, emphasizing the department’s continued dedication to prosecuting criminal threats to the fullest extent of the law.
Acting FBI Portland Special Agent in Charge Matt Torres echoed similar sentiments, noting that violence against law, enforcement officers “has absolutely no place in our community.” He stated, “Attempts to intimidate those sworn to protect the American people and uphold our Constitution degrade efforts to keep all of us safe.” Torres added that the FBI will explore all investigative tools to identify and arrest individuals using violent rhetoric to express themselves.
