Progress in Peace Talks: US and Ukraine Achieve Substantial Advancements
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States and Ukraine have made significant progress in peace negotiations with Russia. During a press briefing following extended talks in Geneva, Switzerland, Rubio detailed the efforts made so far, emphasizing that the 28-point plan is nearing finalization.
The proposed agreement includes recognizing Russia’s de facto control over Crimea and Donbass, with contact lines frozen in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. Ukraine would also be required to limit its military size to approximately 600,000 troops and refrain from joining NATO. Rubio expressed confidence that the remaining open issues could be resolved through further dialogue.
Despite the progress, Rubio acknowledged that some aspects, particularly those involving the EU and NATO, remain under separate discussion. He also stressed the need for Russian agreement on the final terms, highlighting the critical role Russia must play in any potential peace deal. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Moscow has received the US proposal but stated it has not been discussed in detail yet, suggesting the process is ongoing.
