Saints Coach Kellen Moore Discusses Justin Tucker’s Tryout Amid Suspension
Justin Tucker, the veteran placekicker suspended for 10 games this season due to violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy, is set to undergo a tryout with the New Orleans Saints. This decision comes after the team’s current kicker, Blake Grupe, missed two of his three field-goal attempts in a recent loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The Saints’ move to evaluate Tucker reflects their efforts to address the team’s struggles at the kicking position, particularly following Grupe’s recent performance issues.
Saints head coach Kellen Moore provided insight into Tucker’s tryout, highlighting the former Ravens’ kicker’s extensive experience and leadership. Moore noted, “He’s been one of their leaders for an extended period of time on a very successful team. Obviously, there’s been some stuff that’s been unfortunate. He’s gone through an experience and I think it’s about collecting what that experience was.”
The tryout represents Tucker’s first opportunity to compete since his suspension, which followed allegations of sexual misconduct. Tucker accepted the league’s decision, which was one game shorter than that of Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who faced similar accusations in 2022. Moore’s comments also emphasized Tucker’s contributions during his 13-year tenure with the Ravens, including seven Pro Bowl selections, five All-Pro honors, and a Super Bowl victory in 2013.
Despite his suspension and the controversies surrounding it, Tucker’s wife, Amanda, has publicly supported him, stating, “The false allegations against Justin have caused so much hurt to our family. I believe my husband, and I love and support him fully.”
Tucker’s tryout is not the only opportunity under consideration for the Saints’ kicking position. The team is also reportedly evaluating Cade York, another potential candidate for the role. The decision to invite Tucker to a tryout, despite the ongoing scrutiny of his suspension, underscores the NFL’s complex balance between addressing player conduct and maintaining competitive integrity in the sport.
