Trump Indicates Potential Progress in Ukraine Peace Talks

US President Donald Trump has expressed cautious optimism that peace talks between Ukraine and Russia may be making progress following meetings in Geneva between US and Ukrainian delegations.

The White House stated that an updated peace framework has been drafted, which will require approval from both Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky. Trump publicly signaled cautious confidence, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted significant progress on the framework, though Russian agreement remains crucial for any deal.

According to recent reports, the original 28-point plan proposed by Washington includes terms previously rejected by Ukraine and its European allies, such as de facto Russian control over Crimea and Donbas, Ukraine abandoning its NATO ambitions, and downsizing its military. Ukrainian European backers have modified the proposal, pushing back on limits to Kiev’s armed forces and territorial concessions.

The Kremlin has stated that Russia has not received any official information about the outcome of the Geneva talks or any revised proposal and has declined to comment on media reports. Moscow confirmed earlier that it had received Washington’s draft, with President Vladimir Putin noting that it could form the basis of a final peace settlement.

EU defies Trump’s Ukraine peace deal

Meanwhile, the European Union has expressed concerns about the terms of the proposed peace agreement, with some members reportedly resisting elements of the framework that could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. The EU’s stance reflects broader Western anxieties about the implications of a potential compromise on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and its bid for NATO membership.
