Ubisoft has unveiled Teammates, an AI-powered first-person shooter that marks the company’s latest innovation in generative AI technology. Developed using the Snowdrop Engine, which also powers games like The Division 2 and Star Wars: Outlaws, the project features an AI assistant named Jas, alongside AI squadmates Pablo and Sofia. These AI entities can be directed through natural voice commands, enabling players to issue instructions during combat or puzzle-solving scenarios. Jas, the AI assistant, handles mission tracking and guidance, providing real-time feedback to enhance the player’s experience.
The development of Teammates is spearheaded by the same team responsible for Ubisoft’s Neo NPCs, which were showcased at GDC 2024. This project is described as Ubisoft’s first playable generative AI research initiative, signifying the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI in gaming. However, this announcement follows a significant shift from Ubisoft’s earlier ambitions with NFTs and the metaverse. The company’s foray into these areas was met with criticism and a lack of consumer interest, leading to a strategic pivot away from these initiatives. Despite this, Ubisoft remains focused on leveraging AI to enhance gameplay and player engagement, positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation in the gaming industry.
