Vikings’ J.J. McCarthy Enters Concussion Protocol Amid Disappointing Season

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy has found himself in concussion protocol after reporting symptoms following a brutal 23-6 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The second-year signal caller’s uncertain status heading into Week 13 has placed the Vikings in a difficult position as the team faces a three-game losing streak. Coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed earlier this week that McCarthy would be in protocol after he reported symptoms on the team flight back to Minnesota.

McCarthy’s season has been a rollercoaster, especially after missing his entire rookie campaign due to a torn meniscus. He was then sidelined for several weeks in 2025 with a high-ankle sprain. His recent performance against the Packers was a stark reminder of his struggles on the field, as he managed just 87 yards on 12-of-19 passing with two interceptions. He was also sacked five times in the loss.

With McCarthy’s potential absence, the Vikings’ backup quarterback, undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, may be forced to take over. Brosmer was already in the quarterback competition when McCarthy was drafted in the 10th overall spot in the 2024 NFL Draft. The undrafted rookie had to step up in the early part of the season when McCarthy was unavailable due to injury and then the Vikings’ quarterback situation grew even more unstable after the arrival of Carson Wentz, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury earlier in 2025.

McCarthy’s first season on the field has been mixed, with six touchdown passes compared to 10 interceptions over six games. He has completed only 54.1% of his passes and also rushed for two touchdowns. His performance in the loss to the Packers has sparked questions about his future with the Vikings, especially as the team’s record has dropped to 4-7 on the season.

The Vikings face an uncertain future as McCarthy’s potential absence could have long-term implications for their quarterback situation. If McCarthy is unable to play this week, it will be up to Brosmer to step up and provide a potential spark for the team.
