An 18-year-old in Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to less than four months in jail for a carjacking, despite federal prosecutors urging a seven-year prison term. Mark Edwards, 18, pleaded guilty to the May 28 incident, during which he and a 14-year-old accomplice stole a double-parked car by falsely claiming they were armed. The sentencing occurred in Superior Court, where Judge Judith Pipe, appointed by former President Joe Biden, imposed a suspended sentence of 84 months with one year of supervised probation. Federal prosecutors, including U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, had sought a full seven-year term, calling the court’s decision a failure to prioritize public safety. Pirro criticized the ruling, arguing that the Youth Rehabilitation Act allows dangerous offenders to walk free. Edwards, who has already served over 108 days in custody, will be eligible to avoid further sentencing if he successfully completes probation. This incident adds to growing concerns about juvenile carjackings in D.C., where 238 such crimes have occurred so far this year, resulting in 135 arrests.
