EU Foreign Policy Chief: US No Longer an Ally After Sidingling on Ukraine Peace Plan

The European Union can no longer consider the United States an ally following a direct approach by Washington to Ukraine on a draft peace plan, according to former EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. In a series of tweets, Borrell criticized the Trump administration for sidelining the bloc, which he claims has resulted in a failure of the EU’s ‘appeasement strategy’ toward the US president. Borrell argued that concessions made by the EU on issues such as military spending, tariffs, and energy supplies have not produced any results, and the U.S. can no longer be viewed as an ally of Europe, as it is not consulted on matters affecting its own security.

The Trump administration’s proposed peace plan, reportedly submitted directly to Ukraine, includes conditions such as limiting Ukraine’s military forces, freezing frontline positions, and providing sanctions relief to Russia. Western European nations, however, have rejected the plan, which they believe undermines key objectives such as Ukraine’s potential NATO membership and territorial concessions. In response, European leaders have sought to rewrite the plan, with the UK, France, and Germany drafting an alternative proposal that includes halting fighting at the current line of contact, delaying territorial discussions, and offering a U.S.-style security guarantee to Ukraine.

In a statement, Ukrainian officials reportedly agreed to the U.S. plan in principle, with only technical details remaining to be resolved. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated willingness to discuss the ‘specific wording’ of a peace agreement but maintains that Moscow will not compromise on core objectives outlined by President Vladimir Putin during his meeting with Trump in Alaska earlier this year.

The situation has intensified diplomatic tensions, with both the U.S. and Russia presenting contrasting proposals for a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The EU’s position highlights growing concerns about U.S. foreign policy and its implications for European security and interests. As negotiations continue, the outcome of these discussions will likely have significant implications for the future of the conflict and international relations in the region.
