Following reports that the White House had drafted a proposal for ending the Ukraine conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denounced the leaks as an attempt to sabotage President Donald Trump’s peace efforts. Lavrov criticized Western officials for trying to undermine the plan, suggesting that the leak was intentional to distort its content and media attention.
The leaked documents, initially published by U.S. media and later by a Ukrainian MP and Axios, outlined a 28-point roadmap towards ending hostilities between Kiev and Russia. Lavrov noted that Russia obtained the proposal through unofficial channels and would only engage in discussions if the U.S. submits a proposal. However, he emphasized that Russia would do so confidentially, without public exposure, which he criticized as ‘megaphone diplomacy.’
Lavrov accused European leaders, particularly French President Emmanuel Macron, of not having the best intentions and failing to reach an agreement on key issues such as Kiev’s bid to join NATO or host foreign troops. He reiterated that Russia would not compromise on the core objectives set during Trump and Putin’s meeting in Alaska, warning that if the spirit of that meeting is erased, the situation could be drastically different.
Despite the leak, Lavrov maintained that Russia would be willing to discuss the specific wording of a potential peace deal but stressed that Moscow would not deviate from its core demands. The leaks have intensified tensions between Russia and Western leaders, with Russia accusing them of undermining Trump’s diplomatic efforts.
