The incident has drawn sharp criticism from McLaughlin, who called the alleged plot ‘chilling,’ noting the shock and concern that a school educator, let alone a child’s teacher, would be involved in such violent planning. ‘It’s chilling that a human being, much less a child educator, would plot to ambush and kill ICE law enforcement officers—offering such specifics as to getting a high-caliber rifle that would pierce the law enforcements’ bulletproof vests,’ she stated. The case is part of a larger trend of rising violence against ICE agents, with McLaughlin citing a more than 1,150% increase in assaults against them and an 8,000-fold spike in death threats in recent years.
According to law enforcement sources, the Bennetts were overheard in conversation at a Vietnamese restaurant in Virginia Beach on November 17, where they discussed plans to ‘kill police officers and ICE agents.’ Mark Bennett allegedly mentioned his intention to meet like-minded individuals in Las Vegas, where he would also purchase firearms with explosive rounds. Two days later, on November 19, Mark Bennett was arrested at Norfolk International Airport as he was en route to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport to connect to Las Vegas. John Bennett was also arrested that day. Both men are currently in custody while awaiting further legal proceedings.
McLaughlin highlighted the dangers facing ICE agents, stating, ‘They risk their lives every single day to remove the worst of the worst, including murderers, rapists, pedophiles, terrorists, and gang members. From bounties placed on their heads for their murders, threats to their families, stalking, and doxxing online, our officers are experiencing an unprecedented level of violence and threats against them and their families.’ She emphasized that the case is indicative of a broader issue, with the agency reporting a significant increase in violent incidents against its personnel.
Mark Bennett’s attorney, Happy O’Brien, has disputed the details of the case, reportedly claiming that his client was traveling to Nevada for a Formula One motorsports event with his child. O’Brien compared the restaurant conversation to a scene from the NBC sitcom ‘Seinfeld,’ where Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander’s characters often exchanged absurd, yet philosophical, discussions while drinking coffee at Monk’s Café. He argued that the alleged conversation was not indicative of any real threat but rather a fictional scenario, highlighting the potential for misinterpretation of the men’s words.
Both Bennett brothers have been charged with conspiracy to commit malicious wounding. The case has sparked debate over the balance between free speech and the potential for dangerous rhetoric, with some arguing that the alleged plot underscores the need for increased security measures for law enforcement, while others question the extent to which such threats should be taken seriously. As the legal proceedings continue, the case remains a focal point of national attention, highlighting the growing tensions in the context of immigration enforcement and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies.
