The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is investigating two Virginia educators, John Wilson Bennett, an assistant principal at Kempsville High School, and his older brother Mark Booth Bennett, for allegedly plotting attacks on ICE agents. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin of the DHS described the case as ‘chilling’ in a statement to Fox News Digital. The men, both of whom have been arrested, were overheard at a Vietnamese restaurant in Virginia Beach discussing their plans to go to Nevada and engage in attacks against ICE agents. McLaughlin emphasized that the plot involved acquiring high-caliber weapons that could potentially pierce bulletproof vests, highlighting the severity of the threat. The case is being viewed as part of a larger pattern of violence against ICE agents, with McLaughlin noting a more than 1,150% increase in assaults and an 8,000-fold rise in death threats compared to the previous year. Law enforcement, including an off-duty Norfolk police officer, overheard the men planning to meet in Las Vegas to obtain firearms with explosive rounds. Mark Bennett was arrested at Norfolk International Airport while en route to Las Vegas, and John Bennett was also arrested the same day. Mark Bennett’s attorney, Happy O’Brien, has disputed the account, stating that his client was actually traveling to Nevada for a Formula One motorsports event with his child, as reported in the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot. O’Brien compared the situation to a fictional scenario from the NBC sitcom ‘Seinfeld,’ where characters often engaged in trivial conversations while having coffee. Both Bennett brothers have been charged with conspiracy to commit malicious wounding. This case has sparked debates about the increasing threats faced by law enforcement, with McLaughlin underscoring the risks taken by ICE agents in their roles, including facing bounties on their heads, threats to their families, and online harassment.
