DHS Officials Condemn Virginia Educator and Brother for Alleged Plot to Attack ICE Agents

Top Homeland Security officials have condemned a Virginia educator and his brother for allegedly plotting to attack ICE agents, following the duo being overheard discussing violent intentions in a restaurant in Virginia Beach. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin of the Department of Homeland Security described the case as ‘chilling,’ noting the alarming aspect of a school official contemplating an ambush on law enforcement with high-caliber weapons specifically to pierce bulletproof vests.

The case has sparked a broader discussion about the growing threats faced by immigration enforcement agents, with McLaughlin stating that such incidents have increased by over 1,150% in assaults and an 8,000-fold rise in death threats. The FBI and local law enforcement agencies are working together to investigate the allegations, which reportedly came to light after an off-duty Norfolk police officer overheard the pair discussing plans to go to Nevada to acquire weapons and form a network of like-minded individuals.

The Bennetts, who are currently under investigation, were reportedly flying to Las Vegas, where Mark Bennett was planning to attend the F1 Formula One motorsports event with his child. However, they were arrested at Norfolk International Airport, en route to Las Vegas, after the alleged threats were brought to authorities’ attention. The attorneys for the Bennetts have denied the allegations, suggesting the conversation might have been a mundane exchange, much like scenes from the iconic NBC sitcom ‘Seinfeld.’

McLaughlin underscored the risks faced by ICE agents, highlighting the ‘unprecedented level of violence and threats’ they and their families encounter as they carry out their duties. The case has prompted renewed emphasis on the importance of safeguarding law enforcement personnel and the need for public vigilance and support.
