Zelenskyy Enacts Sanctions Against 121 Russian Commanders and Nine Religious Figures

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has taken significant action, signing decrees that implement the decisions formulated by the National Security and Defense Council. These decrees formalize the imposition of comprehensive sanctions against high-profile Russian individuals.

The primary component of these sanctions targets the military leadership of the Russian Federation. Specifically, 121 Russian commander has been sanctioned. These commanders are implicated in coordinating or participating in missile attacks launched against Ukrainian civilian and military infrastructure. By targeting key military figures, Ukraine aims to escalate the punitive measures against Russia’s military apparatus, which continues to threaten the nation’s sovereignty and security.

Beyond the military sphere, the sanctions extend to the religious domain. Nine Russian religious figures have also been subjected to sanctions. The basis for including these religious leaders is their alleged role in providing ideological and moral justification for the Russian Federation’s aggressive actions and full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine views their rhetoric as contributing significantly to the systemic undermining of international law and the targeted violence against Ukrainian citizens.

These sanctions package, resulting directly from the consultative process involving the National Security and Defense Council, represents a continuation of Ukraine’s strategy to isolate and economically pressurize Russia. By targeting specific individuals—whether military planners or religious ideologues—Kyiv aims to inflict maximum pressure on the establishment in Moscow, thereby bolstering international efforts to achieve a full withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory.
