Karen Read has told reporters during a press conference on Thursday that she did not notice any apparent confrontation or tension between her deceased boyfriend, John O’Keefe – a Boston police officer – and Agent Brian Higgins of the ATF at the Waterfall Bar and Grille in Canton, Massachusetts, hours before his unexpected death on January 15, 2022.
Read’s defense team, which recently received a significant boost from the testimony of a plow driver who claimed to have seen no body in the snow during the critical moments of the incident, is actively working to build an alternative narrative by suggesting potential fights or disputes between Higgins and O’Keefe as possible causes for O’Keefe’s injuries.
The situation became more complex when the video footage played in court showed Higgins gesturing toward O’Keefe from across the room, and another individual, Chris Albert, grabbing his arm. These interactions, as per the court’s records, occurred less than an hour before O’Keefe was found dead outside Albert’s brother’s house in a blizzard. The timing has raised questions about the exact sequence of events.
Read’s defense has been highlighting the presence of a supposed emotional rift or jealousy on Higgins’ part as a possible motivating factor for any potential altercation with O’Keefe. In fact, the case reportedly revealed text messages between Read and Higgins that were sent behind O’Keefe’s back, suggesting a relationship that could have created underlying tensions.
Prosecutors, however, have presented physical evidence, such as taillight pieces found on O’Keefe’s clothing which match the Lexus SUV that Read owns, to argue that the collision between Read’s vehicle and O’Keefe was the actual cause of his death. These evidence pieces have been crucial in constructing the case against Read.
Multiple witnesses, including Jen McCabe, the sister-in-law of the house’s owner where O’Keefe was found, have testified that Read said the phrase ‘I hit him’ several times after his remains were discovered. This has added to the ongoing public debate and legal scrutiny over the case, which is currently ongoing and has generated significant media interest.
Read, now facing a retrial since the initial case was dismissed, is at the center of this public trial. Her actions and statements, especially those that have been made in public forums like press conferences, have been criticized by some legal experts as potentially prejudicial, especially in a case that is already drawing significant public attention.
