The Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei was taken off the field in an ambulance during the Sunday match against Columbus Crew after a dangerous collision with an opponent’s knee. The incident, which occurred during a 1-1 game, happened when Frei jumped to make a play on a free kick, resulting in a collision that caused him to fall to the ground. Players around him immediately called for assistance, and the match was paused for evaluation. Frei was alert upon being taken off the field and is reportedly being assessed for head and neck injuries, although his condition is not deemed life-threatening.
Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer expressed concern while emphasizing that Frei’s fingers were moving, indicating no immediate paralysis. The event has sparked discussions about player safety and the potential for such incidents in professional sports. Schmetzer and Crew coach Wilfried Nancy appealed to the referees to stop the match, highlighting the severity of the incident. Despite the collision, the Crew was awarded a corner kick in the final moments, and the game continued to be completed.
Frei, 39, was born in Switzerland but moved to the U.S. when he was a teenager. He played college soccer at Cal and has been with the Sounders since 2014, participating in their MLS Cup-winning squads in 2016 and 2019. He was the 2016 MLS Cup MVP and an All-Star in 2017.
The MLS veteran has appeared in 425 matches, starting in 424 of them. He’s played in 343 matches for the Sounders, and the team confirmed he made his 1,000th regular-season save in the match against the Crew. Only former Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando has more saves with a single team, totaling 1,128.
Frei’s post on social media on Monday reflected his gratitude for the support he received, expressing his relief and thanks to the medical staff that assisted him and his happiness to be back home resting. The incident has generated significant attention and is a reminder of the risks involved in professional sports, particularly in high-contact games like MLS matches.
