Violence Rocks Chicago During Fourth of July Weekend, Claims 6 Lives

Chicago experienced a violent Fourth of July weekend, resulting in over 50 shootings and six fatalities across multiple areas of the city, including South Side, West Side, and Lake View. The violence included several mass shootings and drive-by incidents, with reports indicating that at least four people were killed and 14 injured in one attack alone.

According to the reports, the violence began around midnight on Thursday, July 3, and continued through Sunday night. The Chicago Police Department, along with the city’s mayor, has not yet released any official statements about the incidents. The city has also seen a rise in shootings over recent months, with 170 fatal shootings reported so far this year, according to city data.

One of the most severe incidents occurred in the Little Village neighborhood, where a drive-by shooting injured four people, three critically, and left at least four dead. The shooting occurred when several suspects in an SUV opened fire on victims who were sitting in their own vehicle. The incident has drawn attention due to the high casualties and the potential for more attacks.

Other incidents include the shooting of two men in separate cases, both of whom were found dead with gunshot wounds to the head. The first was a 46-year-old man who was shot while sitting in his vehicle in the Lake View neighborhood. Police have a suspect in custody for that incident. A 30-year-old man was then found dead on the West Side, though the motive remains unclear.

On Friday night, multiple shootings were reported on the South Side, with several people injured. A 36-year-old man identified as Marco A. Velasquez-Sierra was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. The incident remains under investigation, as no one has been arrested. Another incident saw two unidentified males open fire on a crowd, injuring seven, two of whom were critically hurt.

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old girl named Meeyah Smith died from a gunshot wound to the throat, with no arrests made. Early Thursday morning, two women were shot, one fatally, while inside a home during an attempted robbery. The deceased woman was 29 years old, and the attack followed a struggle with an unidentified suspect.

Over Memorial Day weekend, the city saw 22 people shot, two of them fatally, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence. With the city’s violent crime rate continuing to rise, officials have called for increased efforts to address the problem. The Chicago Police Department has not yet responded to comment requests, leaving the situation under investigation and further police presence expected in the area.
