Max Homa’s Heartbreaking U.S. Open Qualifier: Carried His Own Bag for 38 Holes

Max Homa, a renowned golfer, faced a significant challenge during the 2025 U.S. Open qualifier at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club. He carried his own bag for all 38 holes, a decision made after his caddie, Bill Harke, unexpectedly left him. Despite his efforts, Homa missed the cut in a heartbreaking fashion, as the final spot was won by Cameron Young in a playoff.

The qualifier, dubbed ‘Golf’s Longest Day,’ saw numerous top golfers, including Rickie Fowler, Bud Cauley, Jake Knapp, Padraig Harrington, and Adam Hadwin, competing across multiple locations. Homa’s decision to walk his own bag was a stark contrast to the usual support he receives. He mentioned that the solitude helped him focus, though it was physically demanding.

Homa’s performance in recent tournaments has been mixed, with his last made cut at the Masters. After a T12 finish there, his subsequent results have been inconsistent, with finishes like 70th, T30, T60, and T51. Despite his struggles, Homa remains in the running for the U.S. Open through the Canadian Open, where a win would grant him a spot in the top 60.
