Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Endorses Trump’s Defense Spending Push, Warns Diplomacy with Putin is Failing

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba voiced strong support for Donald Trump’s demands for NATO to increase defense spending, calling it a pivotal move for Europe’s security. During an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, he highlighted the alliance’s pledge to achieve a 5% GDP defense spending target by 2035 as a significant achievement for both Trump and Europe’s long-term stability. Kuleba emphasized that this move, which he described as a ‘big, immediate win’ for Trump, would signal a commitment to security and deter further aggression, particularly against Ukraine.

Kuleba, however, expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of current diplomatic efforts with Russia. He warned that the peace talks are nearing an end due to Vladimir Putin’s refusal to compromise, stating that the Russian leader’s stance is ‘unyielding’ and his attacks on Ukraine continue unabated. Despite repeated ceasefire proposals from the West, Putin has shown no willingness to halt his military campaign, Kuleba argued. The former diplomat suggested that without a significant shift in Putin’s behavior, the conflict will persist with devastating consequences for Ukraine.

In his interview, Kuleba also urged Europe to become more self-reliant in defense, warning that over-dependency on external powers, such as the United States or Russia, is unsustainable. He criticized the European Union for its reliance on American security guarantees and Russian energy supplies, arguing that such dependence leaves the continent vulnerable. He called for Europe to take a more proactive approach, not only in defense but also in economic self-sufficiency, to ensure long-term stability.

Kuleba pointed to the recent European Union sanctions package as part of the strategy to pressure Russia into altering its behavior. He emphasized that the EU’s continued economic and military support for Ukraine is essential, but he also warned that without significant changes in Russian conduct, further escalation is likely. The diplomat called for a balanced approach combining carrots and sticks in negotiations, arguing that time pressure and decisive action are necessary to restart the peace process.

Meanwhile, the situation on the ground has remained tense, with Russia continuing large-scale attacks on Ukraine, including strikes on Kyiv using missiles and drones. Despite Trump’s efforts to broker a ceasefire and pressure Putin, the Russian leader has yet to show any sign of willingness to negotiate. With the war showing no signs of slowing, Kuleba’s warnings underline the growing concerns among Ukrainian officials and international allies about the future of the conflict and the need for a decisive resolution.
