Public health officials in Washington state have issued a measles exposure alert following the visit of a Canadian traveler who was contagious with measles. The individual, whose vaccination status remains unknown, traveled through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and visited various public locations in multiple cities across the state between April 30 and May 3, according to a King County news release. Health officials warned that the virus, which can remain airborne for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area, poses a risk of transmission even before the onset of symptoms such as a rash. The case is not linked to any previous local measles outbreaks, but officials have reported two other measles cases this year from non-residents, bringing the total number of cases in Washington to five this year.
Medical epidemiologist Meagan Kay for Public Health – Seattle and King County highlighted the growing concern over a measles resurgence in the U.S. and globally. With over 1,000 cases reported so far this year nationally, 2025 is on track to have the highest number of measles cases in the U.S. since the early 1990s. Kay emphasized the importance of checking vaccination status and getting vaccinated if individuals are not protected. Officials encourage anyone who was in the potentially affected locations to consult a healthcare provider if they develop symptoms such as fever or an unexplained rash.
The potential exposure sites include major locations such as Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Bellevue Market Place, Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery, Home Depot in Redmond, Dunn Lumber in Renton, Genki Sushi in Renton, Topgolf Renton Sport Bar and Restaurant, Pho Mignon in Kirkland, Kobo at HIGO Art Gallery, Uwajimaya Seattle Asian Market, Stoup Brewing, Spicy Style of Sichuan, a hotel, and three fitness centers. Health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to avoid the spread of the virus. This incident highlights the critical role of vaccination in preventing the spread of infectious diseases and the importance of public health awareness in high-traffic areas such as airports and shopping centers.
