D&D Updates Core Rules, Maintains CC License

Wizards of the Coast has released the System Reference Document (SRD) for Dungeons & Dragons’ 2024 gameplay under a Creative Commons license, reaffirming its commitment to open access. The updated SRD includes expanded rules, backgrounds, feats, and monsters, while retaining copyright on iconic creatures like Beholders and Illithids. This move follows earlier attempts to adjust the license, which faced significant pushback and ultimately led to a retreat.

The SRD now includes more 2023 5th edition rules, as well as additional content such as the Rhythm of Play and Exploration documentation, character origins, and over 150 new game elements. Despite these updates, certain elements like specific monster stats remain protected under copyright, highlighting the company’s ongoing control over its intellectual property.
