Office workers are increasingly concerned about a new health issue known as ‘office chair butt,’ which has gained traction on social media as a side effect of extended sitting. Fitness trainer Alissa Mosca and ergonomist Jonathan Puleio have highlighted this condition, warning that sitting in one position for too long can cause muscle loss in the posterior chain (along the back of the body), resulting in a flatter appearance in the rear.
Mosca, a certified fitness trainer with Planet Fitness, explained that ‘office chair butt’ is the result of stagnant sitting, which prevents the activation of the glutes, hamstrings, and quads. To combat this, she recommended integrating simple exercises throughout the day to stimulate muscle activation. These exercises can be done even from an office chair, as she pointed out, making it accessible for anyone with a sedentary job.
Puleio, a board-certified ergonomist, added that not only do muscle groups atrophy, but fat tissue also accumulates, which can lead to a flatter, sagging appearance. He emphasized the importance of movement and posture shifts but also stressed that chair design plays a significant role in mitigating this issue. Chairs with self-adjusting recline mechanisms can promote movement, while sit-to-stand workstations can help reduce the risk of ‘office chair butt,’ he explained.
Both experts advised employees to incorporate micro-breaks into their routines, such as taking a glass of water or a quick walk around the office. Additionally, they encouraged employers to prioritize healthy workplace ergonomics, as discomfort is a precursor to pain and injury. Puleio warned that such injuries can be costly and debilitating, highlighting the need for preventive measures to maintain employee well-being.
