A sophisticated AI voice impersonation scheme has targeted high-level U.S. officials, including foreign ministers, a state governor, and a member of Congress. The impersonator, using AI to mimic Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s voice and writing style, has engaged in a multi-month campaign to gain access to sensitive information and accounts. U.S. authorities are investigating but have not yet identified the perpetrator. The campaign, which began in mid-June, involved both text messaging and the encrypted Signal app, with the impersonator using the display, ‘[email protected]’ to contact unsuspecting diplomats and politicians. The State Department has raised concerns about the potential for such impersonations to compromise national security by granting unauthorized access to confidential information.
