Google Tightens Control Over Gemini AI Integration on Android

Google is enhancing the integration of its Gemini AI across Android devices by granting the AI access to core apps like WhatsApp, Messages, and Phone. This change, rolled out on July 7, 2025, may override some privacy settings, prompting users to seek ways to disable Gemini on their devices. The official email and support pages currently lack consistent information on the AI’s behavior and how to disable its access. However, users know that Gemini will interact with other applications, such as making calls through the Phone app or sending messages through WhatsApp.

Gemini will still interact with Android apps even if users turn off Gemini Apps Activity. This setting allows Google to save interactions with Gemini apps, which are used to train the AI by enabling human reviewers to analyze conversations. Settings options may vary depending on the device model, region, or update status, and some users might not see certain settings. Google has made it vague by stating that users can block Gemini from interacting with other apps in the Apps settings. This means users must manually disable the Gemini app if it’s installed on their phone.

If a device doesn’t have Gemini installed, the recent changes won’t automatically install it, ensuring users remain in control of its presence. However, users should remain cautious about future updates that might stealthily introduce Gemini features without their consent. Gemini can also interact with other apps through the Google app on Android, so disabling Gemini in that app is recommended. Even after disabling Gemini on Android, users must understand how their data is handled and what settings require attention.

Users who have already disabled Gemini features can expect these settings to remain off, albeit with a recommendation to double-check for any changes. The Gemini app will not be installed automatically if it isn’t already on the device, leaving users in control of its installation. However, conversations with Gemini may be reviewed and annotated by human reviewers for quality control and AI training, even if the activity is deleted. This data, disconnected from the Google Account, can be retained for up to three years. Google advises users to avoid sharing confidential information in Gemini chats.

While some users may welcome this change, others who prioritize control and transparency over data may opt to limit Gemini’s access. Unfortunately, Google’s guidance remains unclear, and fully disabling Gemini on Android requires rooting the device. By actively reviewing and adjusting settings, users can regain some control over their data. As AI systems become more advanced, the trust in companies to prioritize user privacy over profits is increasingly questioned, prompting users to seek informed decisions about their data management.
