America First Legal (AFL), a conservative legal advocacy group aligned with former President Donald Trump, has escalated its push for stricter voter eligibility measures, this time targeting the federal Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to mandate proof of U.S. citizenship for all federal voter registration applicants. In a recent petition filed with the EAC, AFL seeks to amend the national voter registration form to require applicants to present one of several documents confirming their citizenship status, such as a U.S. passport, birth certificate, consular report of birth abroad, certificate of naturalization, or state-issued REAL-ID compliant license.
