Chinese Authorities Deploy New Tool to Hack Seized Phones and Extract Data

Security researchers have identified a new malware tool, Massistant, allegedly developed by Xiamen Meiya Pico, that Chinese authorities use to extract data from seized phones. According to mobile cybersecurity company Lookout, the tool enables access to text messages, images, location histories, audio recordings, contacts, and more. While the exact agencies using Mass, the report highlights the risks posed to users, including Chinese residents and travelers. Lookout noted that the malware leaves traces on the device, allowing users to potentially identify and delete it, but the data is already compromised once the tool is installed.
