President Donald Trump criticized former President Joe Biden after an illegal immigrant with a lengthy criminal history allegedly shot a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer in the face in New York City. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump accused Biden of releasing the suspect, 21-year-old Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, a Dominican national, into the country despite being apprehended by Border Patrol in April 2023. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Nunez had an active warrant for kidnapping in Massachusetts and prior felony arrests. New York City Mayor Eric Adams added that Nunez had been charged with assault and violating an order of protection, along with a robbery and stabbing incident.
The incident occurred as Nunez and another suspect attempted to rob the officer in Riverside Park, leading to a confrontation where both were shot multiple times. Authorities reported that the officer is expected to recover, while Nunez was taken into custody and faces additional charges. Trump accused the Democrats of flooding the country with criminal invaders, demanding that all such individuals be removed or prosecuted immediately, emphasizing the danger they pose to national security.
DHS has lodged a detainer against Nunez, urging swift action to ensure his deportation. The incident has reignited political tensions over immigration policies, with Trump using it to criticize the Biden administration’s border control measures and its perceived leniency toward undocumented immigrants. The shooting underscores the growing concern over rising violence against law enforcement, particularly CBP officers, which has become a central issue in the political discourse surrounding border security.
