ABC’s Martha Raddatz Challenges Mayor Karen Bass on Trump’s Immigration Success

ABC News correspondent Martha Raddatz took aim at LA Mayor Karen Bass on Sunday, fact-checking her on the success of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. During an interview segment, Raddatz countered Bass’ assertion that Trump’s crackdown on immigration had not been effective, providing data that suggested otherwise.

The segment aired an interview between Raddatz and Bass, in which Bass criticized Trump’s immigration agenda, claiming that the administration’s measures had caused fear in the Latino community. Raddatz, however, pointed out that the administration’s policies had led to record-low border crossings, a stark contrast to the situation under the previous administration.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the lowest number of encounters at the southern border in 2025 was recorded in June, with 25,228 encounters, including a historical low of 8,024 apprehensions. The number of apprehensions is the lowest in recorded history, indicating a significant drop in illegal border crossings.

Bass, who is a Democrat, admitted that while the administration had handled the L.A. wildfires well, she was skeptical about the effectiveness of Trump’s immigration policies. She suggested the approach was punitive and intended to deter migrants by making conditions as difficult as possible.

Raddatz, in response, highlighted that the Trump administration’s policies had yielded major results, including a dramatic reduction in border crossings, marking a significant shift from the previous administration’s struggles. The mayor’s office did not immediately comment on the report, leaving the debate open for further discussion.
